The big event for the programs in Hawaii in July was the US Sailing Association Junior Olympic Festival.  There were over 100 sailors participating in 4 different classes of boats.  The winds were on the light side with the sea breeze sometimes winning out over the light trades.  Congratulations to HYC sailor Morgan Merrill who won the 420 event as a crew and also won the laser event over-all!  He will be traveling to Chicago for the US Sailing Association Junior Nationals.

Upcoming events in August include two laser regattas in Kaneohe on Aug 2 and 3.  The next adult sailing class will be on Thursday August 21 at 630pm.  This is an on land sailing theory course with the on water portions scheduled on the weekends.

You may notice the sticker "HYMO" on a couple of our boats and I wanted to take the time to explain what the letters mean.  The Hawaii Youth Maritime Outreach is an organization dedicated to helping youth experience maritime activities.  Sailing is a part of their outreach and they have provided financial assistance to potential sailors in the Hawaii yacht Club Sailing program for over a decade.  Hundreds of children have taken sailing classes over the years due to the help of HYMO.  Several sailors have taken intermediate and advanced levels of instruction , competing in local races with area clubs.  HYMO also accepts boats that we use in our sailing program.  420's, Toppers, El Toros, Boston Whalers, and Lasers are all items that HYMO has helped out with.

I want to thank the Hawaii Youth Maritime Outreach for their assistance;  they have renewed their pledge to fund sailors at HYC for 2008.  If you want to see the results, come down on a Saturday morning and see the sailors in action.

If you are interested in furthering HYMO's mission, please contact Scott at Jrsail@hawaii.rr.com or 949-7547x18.
