Hello gang!
Louis
Valenta had a cat and I cannot keep her, so she is looking for a new home
with people to love her! Mamma kitty is a bit older, but very smart, and
still loves to play with a string or sit around outside. She loves to
snuggle up and sleep with you, she doesn't eat much, and she is in excellent
health (just had a check up). She can live with other cats or other animals,
and would do fine as an outdoor/indoor cat or as an indoor only. Lu loved
her very much!
If you would like more information or can provide her with a good home, please call 808 599 0614. Thank you!

I'm writing about the opportunity to join a sailing expedition on S.V.Sea Dragon with Pangaea Explorations.
Attached is a flyer announcing an ocean sailing expedition from Mexico
to Hawaii which may be of particular interest
to your network. Other expeditions are listed on our website www.panexplore.com.
At Pangaea we exist to fill a critical gap between the many ocean threats and the awesome challenges of going to sea. Our team, vessel and capabilities allow us to enable critical marine conservation work. In the last 18 months Sea Dragon has sailed 35,000 nautical miles traversing four ocean regions, five continents and both hemispheres...
Through the dead calm of a mid-ocean gyre, to five days of 60+kt winds, over 80 unique individuals including scientists, journalists, photographers, educators and conservationists from multiple nationalities have done critical conservation work. The team have carried out 12 expeditions working on issues ranging from plastic pollution research, remote island coral surveys, to isolated community journalism.
Now we are gearing up for massive year in 2012 focusing on critical issues in the Pacific Ocean and in the process of signing up crew for each of the expeditions across the Pacific. Contact us at info@panexplore.com or visit our website ww.panexplore.com for more details.
Kind regards
Emily

Please click here for the results of this year's HYC Lahaina to Honolulu Race. We all prayed for more breeze but all boats that started on Labor Day Monday made it back safely eventually (some on Tuesday). It was another spectacular Lahaina weekend filled with a fun LYC Lahaina Lights Regatta (controversially with more wind than the return), a terrific WIN of the Oahu softball team, now widely known as the Oahu Thundercocks (their winning motto was "You cannot spell Dynasty without Nasty"), and wild sabot racing in front of Lahaina Yacht Club. Thank you Dan O'Hanlon, Ashley Olsen, John Pope, and all the wonderful LYC staff for arranging moorings, rides to the boats and the game, hosting us Oahu sailors in your club, providing us with food and drinks when we needed it the most. As one of the Lahaina Return participants adequately put it: "It just keeps getting better every year!" Thank you PRO Johanna Katzman, Race Committee Mike Rothwell, Elise Leroux, and Doug, and of course Phillip Katzman and Joseph Shacat for dealing with Regatta Network, setting up, and scoring the race. Special thanks go to Cecilia Jansson for designing the first ever Lahaina to Honolulu regatta shirt. Send us your ideas for next year!

Thank you race committee for being out there so we could play. Thank you boat owners for supporting the sailing fleet through all of our races. The overall winner of the Wahine Racing Series and the recipient of the North Sails Wahine Skipper of the Year trophy is: LINDSEY ANDRADE! Congratulations, you rocked it!! The trophy will be presented at the HYRA Awards banquet on November 19, 2011. Greetings all,
The Coast Guard's Waterways Management Office has recently created a new
e-mail address for handling marine event permits and requests. Anything
sent to this e-mail address will be accessible by all members of the Waterways
Management staff. Please use the following as the primary e-mail address
when sending anything to the Coast Guard concerning marine events and
permits:
D14-DG-SH-SecHono-MarineEventPermits@uscg.mil
Please share this information with everyone in your boating/canoeing/paddling/swimming community.
Please be aware that the Coast Guard requires permits for the following events in addition to the State/DLNR/DOBOR permits:
In addition to the Coast Guard permit application, a copy of a written Safety Plan for the event, the details of the Communications Plan, and copies of any insurance documents pertaining to the event are required (ed.: contact HYRA PUBLICITY under this email address if you have any questions about this, as we just prepared all this for the Lahaina to Honolulu Race).
Additionally, I'm also requesting that any permits or requests for permits that have been submitted to the Coast Guard since August 20th, 2011 to Mr. Karl Alejandre be re-submitted to the address listed above. Mr. Alejandre typically receives all permits and requests for the Coast Guard however, he is working in another location until the end of September. Any permits or permit requests that were sent to him have not been reviewed by anyone else in our office.

2011 APEC Leaders Meeting will take place in Honolulu on November 12 and 13, 2011. Leaders of APECs 21 economies are expected to attend.
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, is a 21-member association of economies from the Asia-Pacific region working together to advance regional economic integration and prosperity.
Letter from Reg White:
Hi,
I attended the Hawaii Ocean Safety Team meeting today and the first presenter was the CG with a report of their involvement in the security preparations for APEC. This was their first presentation on the subject.
There are some 13 agencies locally who will each have their own area to secure and each of them is entirely independent of the other 12 agencies, their only outside communication being to the U.S. Secret Service. No inter agency co-ordination except through the SS people.
The CG said that the port of Ala Wai will be closed from Magic Island, 2600 yards along shore to the east border of Ft Derussy and out to 1500 yards offshore from Thursday mid day through late Sunday, Nov 8 - 13.
No vehicle entrance into Ala Wai Harbor except for registered tenants who will only enter at the shipyard and leave via Hobron with all persons wishing to enter or leave being vetted by the U.S. Secret Service ahead of time and issued a special parking permit.
No Public parking in the harbor area will be allowed.
No vessel movement in or out of the harbor, no vessels within 1500 yards of shore along the coast.
Honolulu Harbor is secured from the Pearl Harbor border of the airport to the East side of Honolulu Entrance channel.
Kewalo Basin is not secured.
Keehi is completely closed.
I asked how many Waikiki roads are closed to traffic? The response was that this is HPD's department and only they can answer the question.
No one knows when a motorcade will pass through and when that happens, all bets are off and everything comes to a stop. They will not allow any notice of motorcade schedules to be let out at all.
On Sunday the area off of Kalailoa will be off limits from Barbers Point Harbor entrance to the Kahe Point electric plant, out 1500 yards. The big doings and closing ceremony are at Ihilani that day. Also the freeway past the airport may well be off limits Thursday and Sunday and we have to use the inland route. Only HPD knows.
They emphasized that now is the time to spark up and become very observant as terrorists will plan far ahead for any act they might want to try to pull off during the meetings.
The Secret Service is here and will want to vet our tenants far ahead of the start date. They have lots of time to waste for us in the process.
Best plan is sail out on a vacation trip on the 8th and return on the 14th, or put lots of food and booze onboard and just stay home and watch TV and drink from Thursday through Sunday.
Getting out to go to work and coming home again in the Ilikai, Hawaii Prince etc or any boat in the harbor will be a very long and frustrating experience each time you try to go one way or the other from the present sound of things.

Lahaina to Honolulu Race - Labor Day
For the first EVER Lahaina Return shirts are available! Please use the following link to order your t-shirt(s) NOW:
http://tinyurl.com/2011-Lahaina-Shirts
Anybody can visit this site, you do not have to register for the race in order to buy shirts from the regatta storefront.
Please note that you can only order shirts until this Friday, August 26 at 10:00 AM. The printers need about a week to finish all the shirts. We will get a few extra of each size, that will be available in Lahaina. But please don't count on just getting your shirts then. They may all be gone by the time you find us.
Skippers: one shirt is already included in the registration fee for the regatta. Please purchase additional shirts for your race and ground/support crew. There are men and women's versions available and the shirts are Hanes Tagless ComfortSoft 100% open-end cotton fabric with a digital print. See attached pictures.
Your ordered shirts will be available for pickup in Lahaina. Joseph and I will arrive Saturday morning and we are staying at the Aina Nalu. Are planning on bringing the shirts to the Lahaina Lights skippers meeting that morning, as well as to the Lahaina Return skippers meeting on Sunday morning. Additionally, we will be around LYC for the Sabot racing to distribute more shirts. Any leftovers will be available during the awards at HYC Monday evening.
Thank you!

Next Wahine event will be at PYC on August 27. If you haven't yet, you need to register today: http://hyra.us/files/2011/wahine/PYC_Wahine_NOR_2011.pdf
The HYC Wahine Pau Regatta had to be rescheduled from it's original date due to APEC being in town in November and the security details disallowing any ocean events that involve channels. We came up with a new date which has been quite the challenge; as you are all aware our HYRA schedule is already jam-packed. We chose Saturday, September 10, which did not conflict with any Beach Fleets, Classboats, or IRF races and allowed all our competitors to attend. Stay tuned for the NOR.

This year there may be something new - a Family Class. To be eligible for the family class, two immediate family members shall be racing, one of which shall be the person in charge. Sounds like fun to me. Nottage, Denzer, Sanborn and Berg are all interested, so pack up your fishing gear, bring your spouse and children and whoa, scary, there might be some fun to be had! "And what about significant others?" your say. Make your case, I'm all ears. Hey Dan, sounds like the perfect race for you, Lori and Lea. Frederic is going with Pascale, Luca and Ondine. Email Frederic Berg <808.284.4221@earthlink.net> with questions.
Registration for the Lahaina to Honolulu Race is now open. A number of skippers have already taken advantage of the early registration discount by registering online. All of the information you need to find for the event, including the official notice board, list of entrants, and the registration form, can be found at the following site:
https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_club_events.php?CLUB_ID=652
There have been a number of questions regarding mooring. We are working closely with Lahaina Harbor and Lahaina Yacht Club to prepare for the boats that are planning to race. The earlier you register, the better we can prepare. Unfortunately, HYC cannot directly assign moorings. Please review the NOR for contact information at Lahaina Harbor. We will also be posting information regarding suggested anchorages in the area. Additional information will be posted as we finalize the plans.
LYC is going "all out" once again for the softball game (rumor is that the Maui team has already practiced a few times), so break in that mitt and warm up that throwing arm!
Finally, we're working on the t-shirt designs. Once pricing has been finalized, t-shirt orders will be available through the RegattaNetwork website.
The first ever Sailing of the Bulls went off with a bang on Monday night! With the top mark located directly in front of the HYC poop deck, the peanut gallery had a great view of the action. A great time was had by all. Results are attached.
We have a few boats available for additional sailors next Monday (August 15), so please contact Marty Loo at (831) 278-2800 or martyloo2@gmail.com to register.

Hello all,
It has been brought to my attention that there were some scoring errors on the final results posted for last Sunday's Class Boat regatta. As the PRO, I accept responsibility for this and in fact it was my error and for that I apologize to the fleet. Good help is hard to find....I believe the attached reflects the correct scoring based on the various conversations I have had with several skippers. The scoring on the last race was in question and was particularly challenging due to the fact that most of the fleet finished within 10 seconds.
So, please take the time to review the attachment and should it be in need of further correction, please contact me immediately.
Thanks

It is with deep regret that NYC must announce the cancellation of this year's Kauai Channel Race. The race committee met last night and determined that with only four Oahu boats and two Kauai boats entered, there was not enough participation to warrant the running of this event this year.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused those boats that did enter the race and hope you will understand and forgive us for this cancellation.
We will begin planning for next year's race almost immediately and welcome any suggestions that will help us to promote this race to our HYRA neighbor clubs.

Los Angeles, California, July 6, 2011
Transpac leaders are beginning to smell the ocean breeze they crave as
they clear the inner coastal waters for the open Pacific. The 1D35 owned
by Alex Farrell, Alpha Puppy, continues as the handicap leader of Racing
Division 6 today, which is always energizing for the crew even though
they know very well it is too early in the game for the standings to matter.
The fickle winds of the first night have given way to steadier breezes,
especially for the fleet leaders who favored the north side of the track
and focused from the get-go on making distance west. Along with Alpha
Puppy that would be Harry Zanville's SC37, Celerity, the boat farthest-north,
and Charles Browning's J/130, BeBe.
Larry Malmberg's Catalina 38, Hassle, has a grip for the moment on the
handicap lead in the Aloha Class. Elsewhere among the eight boats in this
race-division-for-cruisers, we get a glimpse of the first-night blues
from this follow-up report by Michael Lawler, who used the 2007 race as
the first leg of a circumnavigation aboard Traveler, his North Wind 47.
Now he's back for another go, at the race, not another circumnavigation.
Lawler's report: "At midnight on a moonless night we got stuck in
the mother of all kelp paddies. It took an hour to get free, and early
the next morning, Ric Sanders had to dive in, with a filet knife in his
teeth, to cut kelp from the prop shaft. This was not good, but now we
have a half-decent excuse for being in 5th place (out of 8 boats in our
class.) Lots of dolphins on our bow, and they swam with us playfully for
a half hour or so. For centuries sailors have claimed this as a sign of
good luck. We need it."
Prior to the start, Traveler was at the dock proudly flying the country
flags from its circumnavigation, as we see below. Social note: Traveler
was the only boat to leave the dock with a bagpiper piping.

Today's best reported 24-hour run was the 105 miles made by Crash, Jeff
Braugh's Aerodyne 43. That's hardly fast for this race, but the numbers
should improve beginning today as the fleet advances into the synoptic
breeze blowing from the northwest, down the California coastline. Historically,
distance south is desirable in this 2,225-mile classic race from Los Angeles
to Honolulu. In 2011, however, the two boats that made an early effort
to "take a bite" out of the south side of the track have fared
badly. Wind Dancer (some 55 miles south of Celerity) and Second Chance
may look good soon, if and only if they also get the new breeze quickly.
The daily leaders to the north are going to have to come back south, to
the rhumb line, at some stage, and that's why they call this a navigator's
race.

Transpac, the Transpacific Yacht Race, pioneered the sport of ocean racing
in 1906 and remains a leader more than a hundred years on, building for
the 21st century. Transpac has lived and driven the evolution from heavy
wooden schooners to high-tech hotrods that cross oceans at speeds fast
enough to pull a water skier - if you could find a skier who could take
the ocean. Once, gentlemen lowered their sails at night and waited for
dawn. Today the only question is whether or not to take down "the
big one" when a black squall rises. Transpac also embraces family
crews who fall between the extremes, people who are looking for not-so-simply
the experience of a lifetime.
The 2,225-mile course from California to Hawaii, San Pedro to Honolulu,
is home to the legends. The greatest ocean racing boat of her generation,
Dorade, in 1936 was also the first to sweep Transpac as first-to-finish,
first in class, and first overall. Late in the 20th century, we saw the
advent of lightweight boats that reveled in the downwind, down-wave route
to Hawaii and introduced "big-boat surfing" to ocean racing.
Cal 40's,Windward Passage, Chutzpah and Merlin come to mind. The monohull
course record now belongs to an all-carbon fiber 98-footer from New Zealand,
Neville Crichton's Alfa Romeo, which in 2009 made the Diamond Head finish
in 5 days, 14 hours, navigated by world-record holding navigator, Rolex
Yachtsman of the Year, and Transpacific Yacht Club Board of Directors
member Stan Honey.
Transpac is run by the Transpacific Yacht Club, which also conducts occasional
races to Papeete, Tahiti. Membership is open to all sailors who have completed
a TPYC race to either of these splendid destinations.

Road
to Rolex Women's Clinic
34 women were able to participate last weekend in the Road to Rolex Women's
Clinic!
The conditions were windy, as usual for a wahine event, but they helped us progress enormously. The kites went up and we jibed our hearts out until our coach Allie decided that we...could race.
We had a great time, with Cash Flow and Actuation finishing ahead and everyone giving their all for their teams. And what teams! On the same boat you could find ladies from 14 to 70 (no, we won't reveal who), from yacht clubs all over the island (or, rather, islands! thanks Maui and Boat YC), with all sorts of backgrounds.
This weekend, it didn't matter if you were a teacher or a lawyer, we were all under the scrutinizing eyes of our Road to Rolex coach Allie telling us we could do everything better and faster!
So thank you once more for the owners generosity, for lending us your boats and making this happen. You now have a pool of 34 excellent crew who can rig, tune, tack, jibe, jibe under kite in 25 knots, make the start line, sail upwind, downwind, steal air, repair on the fly and have a great time.
So let us know if you need some extra hands (and brains ;)) to sail with you.
See you on the summer circuit!
Aloha,
Annick Cros

Back to the Future - Transpac News
What's a perfect Transpac ride? A lot depends on what you're doing, this
time.
Philippe Kahn was plenty happy in 2009 when he and Mark Christiansen set
a new doublehanded record in an Open 50 named, as all the man's boats
are named, Pegasus. For 2011, however, the maestro of mobile software
is going retro.
After seven months in the shed at Dencho Marine, Kahn's Andrews 70 has
been "de-turboed" as he says: "We cut 12 feet off the mast,
shortened the fin and went to a smaller bulb with a few thousand pounds
of lead in the bilge. We also took out the bow sprit, and the new, shorter
pole gybes easily inside the forestay. Combine that with a simplified
deck, and three to five of us can handle her at full potential in 35 knots
of wind. A perfect Transpac ride!"
Pegasus 70 is now close to the configuration of a stock Santa Cruz 70,
Kahn says. "We plan to sail her surfing to Honolulu like a Moore
24 as opposed to sailing across the waves, reaching, like a Melges 24.
I surf, and I love surfing, and what we want is to have fair racing with
the other 70s using the Transpac ORR rating. We hope to get more people
wanting to do this and have some great Pacific Ocean sailing."
Gee, it seems only yesterday that the cool thing was to go "turbo."
The upper end of the fleet for the 2011 race has seven 70-footers entered,
two 68-footers and, of course, good ole Ragtime. The fleet has two starts,
July 4 and July 8, and no one is more qualified to decide how he wants
to do it "this time" than Philippe Kahn. He has sailed 12 races
to Hawaii, three of them doublehanded. The new record he set in 2009 with
Christiansen stands at 7 days, 19 hours, which got them to the Diamond
Head Buoy ahead of all the 70s, turboed or un, and lopped two days off
the doublehanded record.
He was already a more accomplished sailor-competitor than most, years
ago, when he declared to your reporter, "I have to learn how to sail
before I die."

The Power of the Sea
Tsunamis, Storm Surges, Rogue Waves, and Our Quest to Predict Disasters
Is the fascinating new book by Bruce Parker, former Chief Scientist of
the NOAA's National Ocean Service, published by Palgrave Macmillan.
A few reviews:
"Whether you love history, science, or just want to know how the
world shapes our lives, this is both an informative and enjoyable read."
Margaret Davidson, Director, NOAA Coastal Services Center
"Mixes hair-raising descriptions of disasters with efforts to understand them... a lucid, original contribution to popular-science writing." Kirkus Reviews
"Riveting readers with analyses of catastrophes such the 2004 Indian
Ocean tsunami, Parker delivers science in dramatic and digestible form."
- Booklist
"Compelling personal stories ... make the book immensely readable
... Be warned, you may never look at the ocean the same way again."
- John Kretschmer, Sailing magazine
"An engaging and essential history of science. It?s also a terrific
account of survival on our wild blue planet." - David Helvarg,
author of Saved by the Sea: A Love Story with Fish
"Rarely does a book written by a practicing scientist grab you like
this one. Intelligent, accurate, and accessible ... read Bruce Parker?s
wonderful book." - Richard Ellis, author of The Empty Ocean
"The Power of the Sea is the best book I have ever read about tsunamis,
storm surges, or rogue waves." - Jerry Schubel, President, The
Aquarium of the Pacific
"You will come away with a better understanding of why the sea will
leave us in awe till the end of time." Jim Cantore, The
Weather Channel
The Power of the Sea tells the story of our long struggle to understand
the physics of the sea so we can use that knowledge to predict when the
sea will unleash its power against us (so we can get out of its way and
survive). It interweaves compelling stories of unpredicted marine disasters
with fascinating stories of scientific discoveries, beginning with ancient
mankind's strange ideas about the sea and working up to our latest technological
advances in predicting the sea's moments of destruction. Besides the three
phenomena highlighted in the book's subtitle, the book also vividly describes
how we learned to predict the tides, El Nino, and certain aspects of climate
change.
Over the centuries, while scientists and mariners were trying to learn
how to predict the motions of the sea, the sea has killed millions, destroyed
untold billions of dollars in property, and had more than one impact on
history. The 300,000 lives lost to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the
millions lost to storms surges in Bangladesh and India over the centuries,
the thousands of ships lost at sea to rogue waves, and the millions killed
in Asia by the droughts and famines caused by two strong El Ninos at the
end of the nineteenth century are but a few tragic examples portrayed
in this book.
In addition to helping us escape natural catastrophes, marine prediction
has also been critical for other purposes, as is dramatically illustrated
by several World War II stories, including the (first-ever-told) story
of the tide predictions for D-Day, and the story behind the surf forecasting
used by the Allies in amphibious landings on the beaches of North Africa
and Normandy. And there are also some lighter stories. How did Benjamin
Franklin "magically" make ocean waves disappear (and how did
this help him understand how wind waves were generated 200 years
ahead of his time)? How did a perigean spring tide almost ruin the Boston
Tea Party? How do elephants "hear" a tsunami coming? Did the
parting of the Red Sea begin with a tide prediction by Moses? How did
a rogue wave begin the myth of the Bermuda triangle? Could the story of
Noah's flood have been inspired by a huge storm surge from a very rare
tropical cyclone in the Persian Gulf?
Written for a general audience, The Power of the Sea is a history of
marine prediction that dramatically shows how the oceans (and marine science)
impact all our lives. It is entertaining while also clearly explaining
the science behind the ocean's most powerful phenomena.

Aloha all,
Mahalo to PHYC for running a wonderful race this past Saturday, in beautiful new boats. When I went aboard, the thought that came to mind was: "is this what a Cal 20 could've looked like in it's hey day?" The boats handled nicely, the race committee work & round robin were carried off smoothly, and of the potluck was extensive & yummy. Mahalo to MWR for reaching out to the community and allowing this event which joins civilian & military/dependents in camaraderie.
For anyone who is interested in seeing the results, they are attached. There will be photos from both KYC & PHYC regattas on the Facebook group soon.
I look forward to seeing the women who have been out there racing, and women who want to be involved in racing, at the Road to Rolex Women's clinic and then at our next regatta: the IRF on Saturday, July 9.
Everyone take care & thanks for lots of fun racing.

Looking Good
The 46th Transpacific Yacht Race takes off on July 4, and the lifestyle
brand Tommy Bahama has created a new sportswear collection in honor of
the race in its 105th year. The lineup includes a technical sailing shoe
aptly named the 'Transpac,' with water drainage ports for traction and
a choice of three colors. The rest of the tightly-focused collection features
casual sportswear pieces: long and short sleeve T-shirts in pima cotton
with the Transpac logo and 'Downwind to Paradise' tagline, a half zip
pullover in French rib, cotton canvas cargo shorts and logo cap.
At the center of the collection, echoing Tommy Bahama's success at creating
Collector's Edition shirts for Major League Baseball, is a Collector's
Edition classic camp shirt. Rich silkscreening and embroidered graphics
combine the Transpac and Tommy Bahama logos over a scene of racing boats
under full sail. On the pocket, Transpac 2011 and race details are printed
in a classic maritime-style stencil. This is a limited edition item, each
shirt numbered and accompanied by a Tommy Bahama Collector's Certificate.
Transpacific Yacht Club Commodore Bill Lee says of the collaboration with
Tommy Bahama: "It's a perfect fit, no pun intended. Transpac is all
about yachting, but it's not blue-blazer yachting. This is the race that
takes you roaring down the trade winds to Hawaii and a big Aloha! When
the welcoming party-and I do mean party-slips one flowered lei over your
head, and then another, you want to be, shall we say, casually correct.
Did I mention that Tommy Bahama is a perfect fit?"
Terry Pillow, CEO of Tommy Bahama, declared, "The company's "life
is one long weekend" philosophy dovetails perfectly with the spirit
of camaraderie and adventure inherent in the Transpac."
Tommy Bahama's Transpac collection will be available in June (www.tommybahama.com
) as the fleet begins to gather at Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach, California,
for the start of the race.

Los Angeles, California
April 3, 2011
Transpac 2011 is only three months away, with starts July 4 and
July 8. Already it's been a challenging, fast-paced year for the Pacific
Basin.
The earthquake and tsunami tragedies in Japan visited lesser calamities
upon other locations, including harbors in Hawaii, where a number of boats
and piers were destroyed by the force of the tsunami. While extending
deepest sympathy to victims at all levels, at Transpacific Yacht Club
we want to assure our sailing friends that just beyond the finish line
and the Lighthouse at Diamond Head, Honolulu's Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, end
point of Transpac 2011, will be ready to host the fleet.
There are harbors on Maui that suffered extreme damage, as did Keehi Lagoon
on Oahu. Farther east on Oahu, the combination of the bottom configuration
outside Ala Wai and an entrance angled away from the oncoming force protected
the harbor from catastrophe.
There was no damage to Ala Wai Harbor piers or to those at Waikiki Yacht
Club, though the more-exposed Hawaii Yacht Club suffered damage to four
piers, including the popular Aloha Dock directly in front of the clubhouse.
(Thumbs-up to the many skippers who evacuated the harbor ahead of the
tsunami surges.) HYC's Aloha Dock is often used for race arrivals and
is popular for post-race berthing. Hawaii YC and its insurance agents
are currently assessing a timetable for repair (updates to come, as they
come).
With 60 refugee boats from Keehi Lagoon presently berthed at Ala Wai,
we foresee some artful juggling along about race time. We have met more
difficult challenges in the past, however, and we fully expect that a
proper Transpac experience will be waiting for all.
Transpac meanwhile is pleased to receive word from two Japanese competitors
that they still intend to race. Akio Matsumoto of the X-41, Petite, writes,
"We sail for California at the end of April." Bengal 7 team
captain Yoshihiko Murase writes, "We look forward to seeing you."
And we look forward to seeing them. Transpac YC Commodore Bill Lee says,
"Many Japanese crews have raced Transpac over the years, and they've
brought something special to the experience for all of us. We wish them
the best in 2011." Other Japanese hopefuls say they cannot commit
at this point, and we understand. Our hearts go out along with the hope
that, yes, we will see them on the starting line in July.
HONOLULU
Bo Wheeler, Honolulu Committee Chairman, reports from the islands, "It's
exciting to see 62 boats already entered in the 46th Transpac, with an
international contingent. The Honolulu committee is actively and energetically
planning for the arrival of the fleet and an unrivaled 'Aloha' at latitude
21N/longitude 157W." Wheeler notes that Transpac has arranged for
competitors and their families to receive discounts of 12 percent off
the best-available rates at facilities on Waikiki operated by Aqua Hotels:
the Aqua Palms and the Ilikai. Best-available rates fluctuate with availability
and type. See details at the race website, http://www.transpacrace.com
, to learn how to reserve your rooms. And please act soon.
MAINLAND
In the tradition of these matters, Transpac Village in Long Beach promises
to be bigger, better - and better yet, even more useful - reports Mainland
Committee Chairman Warren Wolfe, who also is a staff commodore of the
organization providing boat hosts, the Shoreline Yacht Club. Need help
with directions, referrals, a search for parts? Turn to your boat host.
Have family to entertain? There will be tickets to the Aquarium of the
Pacific just steps away. Making the first start on July 4 and looking
for your share of the glory? In addition to the Sendoff Gala, plan to
attend the first-starters-only mixer on Friday night. And if your crew
hasn't met the SAS requirement - at least 30 percent of crewmembers must
have attended a US Sailing Sanctioned Safety at Sea Seminar within the
last five years - you're still in luck. Sign them up HERE for the last-chance
(no foolin') session on July 3.
First start: July 4. Second start: July 8.

Bill Lee, Commodore, Transpacific Yacht Club
Dave Cort, Chairman, Transpac 2011
"Transpac, the Transpacific Yacht Race, pioneered the sport of
ocean racing in 1906 and remains a leader more than a hundred years on,
building for the 21st century. Transpac has lived and driven the evolution
from heavy wooden schooners to high-tech hotrods that cross oceans at
speeds fast enough to pull a water skier - if you could find a skier who
could take the ocean. Once, gentlemen lowered their sails at night and
waited for dawn. Today the only question is whether or not to take down
"the big one" when a black squall rises. Transpac also embraces
family crews who fall between the extremes and are looking for not-so-simply
the experience of a lifetime.
The 2,225-mile course from California to Hawaii, San Pedro to Honolulu,
is home to the legends. The greatest international raceboat of her generation,
Dorade, in 1939 was also the first to sweep Transpac as first-to-finish,
first in class, and first overall. Late in the 20th century, California
designers developed lightweight boats that reveled in the downwind, down-wave
route to Hawaii and introduced "big-boat surfing" to ocean racing.
Cal 40's,Windward Passage, and Merlin come to mind. The monohull course
record now belongs to an all-carbon fiber 98-footer from New Zealand,
Neville Crichton's Alfa Romeo, which made the Diamond Head finish in 5
days, 14 hours in 2009, navigated by world-record holding navigator, Rolex
Yachtsman of the Year, and Transpacific Yacht Club Board of Directors
member Stan Honey.
Transpac is run by the Transpacific Yacht Club, which also conducts races
to Papeete, Tahiti and is open to all sailors who have successfully completed
a TPYC race to Hawaii or Tahiti.

Rabbit Island Regatta and KoOlina Regatta - Rescheduled to 14/15 May 2011
Aloha racers,
A couple of quick announcements. First, please see the Supplemental Files, Notice of Race and Entry Form for the Rabbit Island Race, to be held on Wednesday, May 7. This is an epic race - conditions can range from a mild, fun sail to rough and challenging, but sailors are rewarded with some of the most dramatic scenery in the island while sailing around Rabbit Island. We hope to see you out there!
Also, the Ko Olina Regatta has been re-scheduled for May 14 & 15 (original NOR and Addendum Supplemental Files). This was a difficult date to pick, since it has known conflicts with Kaneohe's IRF (Saturday) and Classboat (Sunday) events. So let me explain the rationale for why this weekend was chosen over other possible weekends.
April 16/17 might have been a good choice, but it conflicts with a wahine regatta (Saturday) and IRF (Sunday). Since a couple of key race committee members are actively participating in the wahine series, this would not be feasible. The weekend of April 23/24 is out, since the 23rd is a Classboat and the 24th is Easter Sunday and this weekend might also be used to practice for Lipton I. The weekend of April 30/May 1 is out, since this is Lipton I. The weekend of May 7/8 is out because of Rabbit Island and Mother's Day. We considered May 21/22 to be too close to the 3-Day Around Oahu race (a 2-day distance race, followed the next week by a 3-day distance race, might be a bit much to ask). There is also the Road to Rolex Clinic May 20-22, which is a very special event, and I did not want to schedule a major regatta on that weekend. Once you get into June, you have Summer Circuit, and there are a lot of "town" sailors that compete in Summer Circuit. The only weekend available in June also has Father's Day, and past experience has shown that races on Father's Day have low participation. Once you get into July and August, the schedule is rather full with Kalakaua Cup, Transpac volunteers, Waikiki Offshores, Kauai Channel Race, etc. Needless to say, some sort of conflict was inevitable, so we appreciate your understanding regarding the final decision.
aloha,

This clinic will be held on Kane'ohe Bay, on the windward side of O'ahu, Hawai'i, just 20 minutes from Honolulu, HI. Check in will start in the evening on May 20 and will be followed by boat rigging with volunteers on hand to assist. The winners of the short race series in the afternoon of May 22 will determine the clinic winner who receives a $200 credit toward her entry fee in the Rolex International Womens Keelboat Championship (IWKC). A debrief, reception, and aloha awards will close out the clinic.
Organized in preparation for US SAILINGs 2011 Rolex International Womens Keelboat Championship, the Road to Rolex clinics facilitate the participation of women in sailboat racing; however, participants do not have to be attending the Rolex IWKC to join in the clinic.
Goals:

Head Coach:
2010 Collegiate Sailor of the Year Allie Blecher will lead the clinic on O'ahu.
Participant Experience:
Participants should have knowledge of tacking, gybing, mark roundings, spinnaker handling and sail trim. However if you are unsure about flying a spinnaker - don't worry - there will be plenty of helping hands on the boat.
Participants who are under 18 at the time of the event will be required to have a signed parental/guardian waiver agreement.
All participants will be required to sign an event waiver.
Proposed Schedule:
- Friday early evening (20th): Registration at KYC, boat rigging, on shore coaching.

Wahine Racing Series - Season Opener
Cal-20 Regatta at Kaneohe Yacht Club
Aloha Sailors & Boat Owners,
The Wahine Racing Series is a unique opportunity for women from around the island to get together and compete. The best end to a full day of racing is to gather for a cold drink, munchies and fellowship!
Being a borrowed boat regatta, this gathering will give us an opportunity
to thank the boat owners for their support.
Would each crew please bring 2 pupus (veggies/dip, chips/salsa, pan of
brownies
) We will have a large cooler of ice to keep your pupus
cold during the race. We will also supply paper products and cups.
Please find Amendment 1 to the Notice of Series clarifying the fees. $5 entry fee per boat/skipper (not per person) will be added to each yacht clubs regatta fees to cover trophy expenses, recognition gifts, year-end celebration, etc.
Please remember that registration starts at 9am followed by the skippers meeting at 9.30am. We currently are expecting 14 (!) Cal-20's to line up for the start!
Important note: Anyone wishing to take a crew of 4, may do so. This will still limit all boats to no more than one male, unless you are in the Adam's qualifiers, in which case all crew will be female.
Don't forget to bring your $250 damage deposit check. No check- no insurance and any damages are your responsibility!

Lahaina Harbor at 6:00 am this morning
Ma'alaea Harbor 3:00pm this afternoon
TSUNAMI STRIKES -- March 11, 2011 -- Report from Ma'alaea and Lahaina Harbors
As you are no doubt aware, the Hawaiian Islands were struck by a Tsunami around 3:00am this morning. Maui's two small boat harbors emptied out during the night, as boat owners headed for deep water in anticipation of the approaching tidal surge. But not everyone was able to evacutate from their slip. Some had to ride it out in the harbor(s).
Maui Boat & Yacht Club member boats which rode out the event in their slips included Boondoggle, Front Street, Snickers, Jennie Mae, and Coquette. It is with great fortune that these member vessels managed to make it through without major damage. Other less fortunate vessels suffered everything from cosmetic damage, to major structural damage, to outright sinking in the case of at least two boats. The rest of our member boats were able to make it out to deep water.
Docks and dock boxes were severely damaged and some disappeared. A trimaran in Maalaea Harbor capsized. I can not imagine how that happened, but it did Large electrical closets were swept off the parking lot and into the harbor. Fresh water was off. Debris and diesel are spread throughout both harbors. A 27 foot catamaran by the Lahaina Harbor dinghy dock was swept onto the parking lot. A powerboat in Ma'alaea Harbor sank when her mooring lines ripped that boats transom off. Another powerboat in Lahaina Harbor flipped and sank.
The 3am tsunami was only the beginning of a long ordeal for boaters. Severe tidal surges and currents ripped into and out of both Maalaea and Lahaina Harbors all day. Both harbors were officially closed and the boats that were out all night and all day to escape the tsunami effects were not allowed to re-enter the harbors. Maalaea Harbor re-opened around 6:00pm and all the boats made a mad dash to tie up in their slips before dark, but some of them were left with nothing to tie to. Lahaina Harbor is officially closed for the night, so everyone is shut out for another night. They should be able to re-enter Lahaina soon after daybreak.
Much work will need to be done on vessels, moorings, docks, and equipment. But to this writer's knowledge, no loss of life or serious personal injuries were sustained. We can all be grateful for that.

Aloha racers,
Due to recent geological events and the continued unsafe conditions in the Ala Wai Harbor, the Friday Night Race for tonight (March 11) has been abandoned. Race committee will also be using this time to get some much deserved sleep...
Also, the HYC Spring Ko Olina Regatta has been postponed. It will be rescheduled for a later date to be determined. Entry Fees to HYC will be credited to a future regatta. Checks for Ko Olina moorage will not be cashed.
If you're looking for something to do this weekend that is boating related, there are over 100 boats in Keehi Lagoon (essentially all of Keehi Marine Center and La Mariana) that are looking for new slips, and I'm sure they could use any help that can be offered.

ON PACE FOR A RECORD FLEET
A SECOND CENTURY ACROSS THE PACIFIC
The Transpacific Yacht Race, 2,225 nautical miles from Los Angeles to
Hawaii, is sailed in odd-numbered years as the oldest and longest enduring
ocean race in the world. Originally, it was the vision of Hawaii's King
Kalakaua as a way to build the islands' ties with the mainland U.S., although
he didn't live to see his dream come true in 1906, when Clarence MacFarlane
organized the first race. The many celebrities who have sailed and won
the 44 Transpacs include Roy E. Disney, actor Frank Morgan and such business
tycoons as Hasso Plattner, Larry Ellison, Richard Rheem, Doug DeVos, Jim
Kilroy and Philippe Kahn. In the past 100 years, Transpac has become synonymous
with challenge, adventure, teamwork and excellence ... inspiring a sense
of achievement and camaraderie in participants, that lasts a lifetime.

Special Invitation to the YC Summit - April 2-3 in Chicago
Good afternoon all,
Please distribute this to the clubs in your RSA that are not attending. If you would like to see who is registered, check here http://media.ussailing.org/Special_Events/YC_Summit/Registered_Clubs.htm. If you have a website, please have the webmaster post the site link.
Also there will not be a CSA meeting in Chicago during the Summit.
I am still looking for a description of your Area/RSA so all of CSA can get to "know" other areas.
Your Area Directors should have forwarded you a list of clubs in your area. If not please contact them directly and request a copy of the list. The purpose of the list is to enable you to see which clubs are current members of US Sailing as well as members of your RSA. If there are defunct clubs on the list, please contact Kelly Jordan kellyjordan @ ussailing . org. Contact those that are not members, they may not realize that their membership has lapsed.
If you have any issues that you would like addressed, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Subject: Special Invitation to the YC Summit
I want to reach out to you about the upcoming Yacht Club Summit on April
2-3 in Chicago. Youve seen all the hype (attached) Gary Jobson,
Stan Honey, Ted Turner are some of the keynote speakers you will meet.
This conference is Garys legacy to sailing. It is a one-time event
that no yacht club will want to miss. Your club is not on the list of
attending yacht clubs: http://media.ussailing.org/Special_Events/YC_Summit/Registered_Clubs.htm.
The biggest reason for not attending is the cost ($185 registration fee
plus travel & accommodations). Smart clubs will amortize the cost
over several years. The things that you will take away from the Summit
will benefit your club for many, many years, and the contacts you make
will last a life time. For more information, visit the Yacht Club Summit
website at http://media.ussailing.org/Special_Events/YC_Summit.htm.
As CSA chair, could you make a plea to all the RSAs to reach out to their
clubs?
Thanks for your help!

USC defends title in Port of L.A. Harbor Cup
SAN PEDRO, Calif.
The Port of Los Angeles is busier than ever, but even the nation's most
dynamic shipping operation has time to play as the continuing sponsor
of the fourth annual Harbor Cup / Cal Maritime Invitational Intercollegiate
Regatta March 11-13.
USC will defend the championship it won last year after placing second
to Maine Maritime Academy the previous two years. Los Angeles Yacht Club
is the organizing authority and California Maritime Academy of Vallejo
is host of the West Coast's only intercollegiate big boat regatta.
Nine teams will compete in up to 10 ocean fleet races over three days,
as conditions permit. The coed crews will sail Catalina 37s chartered
from the Long Beach Sailing Foundation---the same boats to be match-raced
by 10 professional world-class teams in the Congressional Cup March 21-26.
Cal Maritime, second last year, returns with Maine, the U.S. Naval Academy,
the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the University of Hawaii, Cal State U. Channel
Islands of Camarillo and two new participants: UC Santa Cruz and the State
University of New York (SUNY) Maritime Academy.
USC trains out of the U.S. Sailing Center in nearby Long Beach under Mike
Segerblom, a Trojan alum and the center's executive director. The team
will have most of its 2010 crew. Skipper/helmsman Chris Vetter and headsail
trimmer Andrew Nunn have graduated, but bowman Alex Brock Kraebel, pitman
Erik Samuels, main trimmer Kelsey Rupp and trimmer Danny Kivlovitz are
back. Segerblom has not yet picked Vetter's successor.
Most college sailors race dinghies, so a limited number of them, one might
say, know the ropes on keelboats. No problem.
"Not everybody is keen on it," Segerblom said, "but our
team likes it. We're a little lucky that we sail them every summer, but
they're pretty simple and straightforward boats."
On the other hand, training people to sail big boats---really big boats---is
the business for Cal Maritime and several other competitors, making the
event a perfect fit for the Port of Los Angeles sponsor.
But the Keelhaulers from Vallejo may be on more of a mission than anyone.
Last year they shared the lead with USC going into the next-to-last race
only to get caught on the wrong side of a major wind shift that left them
in ninth place for the race and seven points off USC's pace. They made
a gritty comeback to win the last race but couldn't prevent USC from placing
second for a five-point win overall.
But it wasn't a bad year. Earlier they had won the U.S. Collegiate Kennedy
Cup to earn the right to represent the U.S. in last October's World Student
Yachting Championships at La Rochelle, France, where they placed fifth
among 14 teams from 12 countries, behind England, Switzerland, Portugal
and Italy.
Charlie Arms, the school's director of sailing, said, "This year
it will be a mix of veterans and freshman. We have several good freshmen
on our Offshore Team. They were on the boat for the Shields Trophy win
and second at [the 2010] Kennedy Cup."
The Port of Los Angeles is Americas premier port and has solidified
its esteemed reputation by moving more containers than any other port
in the nation, more than doubling its volumes over a 10-year period. It
has a strong commitment to developing innovative strategic and sustainable
operations that benefit the economy as well as the quality of life for
the region and the nation it serves. The Port handled a total of 7,831,902
Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (20-foot containers or TEUs, including empties)
in 2010 and remains the nations busiest trade gateway in terms of
container volume.
