Hawaii Yacht Racing Association News
Aloha sailors,
Please see the attached Notice of Race and informational flyer for the
Winter Beer Can Bash, scheduled for Saturday, January 22, 2010. Since
this is a new event with a new format, below are answers to some common
questions.
What is this race?
This is a fun race! The course will be familiar to Friday Night racers,
but with a twist. Start off of R2, round DH, then sail all the way down
to HH, then finish off of R2. After the race, there will be a party at
HYC with live music, food, and of course plenty of liquid refreshments.
What time is the start?
The first start is scheduled for 3:00 PM (that's 1500 hrs for you proper
nautical folks). The first start will be for the cruising class (aka,
non-spinnaker or JAM - Jib And Main). Subsequent starts for Class B, Class
A, and Multihulls will be at 10-minute intervals.
What about handicaps?
Elapsed times will be corrected using Club (HYC) PHRF Ratings (Time-on-Time).
The Club rating will be based on the HYRA PHRF rating, but gives us a
little more flexibility. For example, we can easily assign a rating to
a boat that does not have a HYRA PHRF Certificate. We can also give a
rating credit to boats with "white sails." The goal is to make
the race more appealing to the Friday Night racers who don't normally
participate in the offshore races.
What is the M.O.B. Drill all about?
For this race, a "Man Overboard" (MOB) Drill will be required
for all boats. The "Man" does not need to be an actual person
- it could be a PFD, floating cushion, blow-up doll, or anything you have
that floats. However, an object must be thrown overboard (no attachments
to the boat) and recovered. There will be some restrictions for safety
purposes (i.e., no drills near turning marks or near the start/finish
line). The Sailing Instructions will cover this in more detail.
Do I need to attend the skipper's meeting?
The skipper's meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 6:00 PM at
Hawaii Yacht Club. Attendance is not mandatory, but we recommend that
each boat send at least one representative. If your boat needs a rating,
or you wish to request some sort of rating credit (i.e., for sailing with
only dacron sails), we need to know about that by the skipper's meeting.
Otherwise, entries will be accepted right up until the race starts.
Who is the organizing authority?
There will be several Beer Can Bashes throughout the year. They will be
sponsored by Hawaii Yacht Club and Waikiki Yacht Club on an alternating
basis. This first event is sponsored by HYC.
Do I need to be a member to participate?
No. You do not need to be a yacht club member to participate in this race.
We are hereby inviting all boats that wish to participate and meet our
requirements (safety, insurance, etc.). However, we sincerely hope that
you have so much fun racing and at the after-party, you will feel compelled
to become a yacht club member.
Does this race count for season points?
No. This race does not count towards HYRA Season Points nor HYC Season
Points.
I have more questions. Who can I talk to?
