Summer 2013 Junior Sailing
HYC Junior Sailing Information
Safety:
Students are required to provide their own U.S. Coast Guard Approved
Personal Flotation Device. The Type III PFD is the most popular, is
the most appropriate for small boat sailing and students like them.
Swimming Skills: Students must pass a swim test of 50 yards
and be able to tread water for 3 minutes. The swim test will be conducted
on the first day of class.
Registration: Students are officially registered when the
following are completed:
Application - Medical Release - Swim Check - Payment to HYC
Non-Sailing
Days: Classes will be held every day that is scheduled. We will
attempt to go sailing on most days. If the weather does not allow
us to go out on the water we will hold class on shore.
Refunds: No refunds are available except for medical emergencies.
If a student cannot attend a session, the unused part of the tuition
may be applied to future courses.
Clothing: Students must bring the following to class:
- A life-jacket
- A change of clothes
- A towel
- Covered footwear that can get wet (taubies, old shoes, reefwalkers,
etc)
- Sunscreen
- A hat
Instructors: All instructors are certified by the United States
Sailing Association and hold current CPR and First Aid certification
from the American Red Cross.
Classes:
Novice courses are taught in the Topper, intermediate courses are
taught in the el toro, and racing courses are taught in the Laser
and 420. It is common for students to take more than one of the same
course as new skills are presented in each session.
Sessions: There are several sessions to choose from in our
year-round program:
- Spring: February May
- Spring Break: One week half day session
- Summer: June-August
- Fall: September-November
