Natasza is back!

Polish sailor, Natasza Caban, 32, is coming back to Honolulu, where she left in July 2007, after sailing solo around the world on her S&S 34’ sailing yacht Tanasza Polska Ustka. She has covered almost 26,000 miles. On Tuesday 12/1/09, when she reaches Hawaii Yacht Club, she will become one of the youngest women in history to sailed solo around the world. Her cruise is something more than a sports challenge, though. It is for a good cause, too. There is a social aspect to it, which makes Natasza and her endeavor totally different form what other female solo sailors have done.

The cruise was divided into sixteen parts. Due to bad weather conditions on the Pacific, the last leg of the cruise turned out to be a bit longer than expected - on her way from Panama to Honolulu, Natasza had to stop at Galapagos and the Marquesas Islands (to avoid the Pacific hurricane season).

One of the main aims of the cruise was to carry out charity campaigns in cooperation with the Against the Odds Foundation from Poland, as a result, Natasza made the dreams of two disabled children come true – she invited them to her yacht during the break in the cruise, and they sailed with her in the area of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Saint Lucia.

All that was possible thanks to Natasza’s sheer determination, 8-year long preparations, and the support of great friends during the whole cruise.
Please join us in welcome Natasza back to Hawaii around 4pm today! We will have a short dock side party as soon as she arrives. On Thursday Morning 12/3/09, please join us at the Hawaii Yacht Club from 9:00 to 11:00 am to meet and greet her, a rededication of her yacht, and some speeches, coffee and light foods.
More info about Natasza and her sail: www.nataszacaban.com.

US SAILING
RACE OFFICER TRAINING
CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
BASIC RACE MANAGEMENT SEMINAR
Saturday
January 16, 2010
Kaneohe Yacht Club

US SAILING and The Hawaii Yacht Racing Association are sponsoring the US SAILING
Basic Race Management Seminar on January 16th at Kaneohe Yacht Club. The seminar
is designed for sailors who have some race committee experience; however,
newcomers are also welcome. It will be held in the club’s upper deck on Saturday
January 16 from 9:00-4:30pm.

The principal instructor for the seminar will be Guy Fleming, The US Sailing
Area H Race Officer. As always, he will be including the experience of the
group in his presentation.

Topics to be covered include:
1• Race Committee objectives, responsibilities and sailing instructions;
2• RC jobs, equipment, setting the course, starting system, starting penalties,
before the start, during the race, finishing and scoring.

At the seminar you’ll need your own copy of the Racing Rules of Sailing
2009-2012. If you’re a US SAILING member you should have already received a
copy. If you’re not a member you can either join US SAILING and get a free copy
or purchase one from the US SAILING Internet site (www.ussailing.org and
click-on “Store, Racing, All Racing Rules”). All will be given a copy of Join
the Race Committee Team at the seminar. To prepare for the seminar you are
encouraged to answer the “Study Questions” which are available on the Internet
site at http://raceadmin.ussailing.org/Assets/Race+Admin/Race+Officers/Documents
/PDF/RMS+Study+Questions-One_Day_Seminar.pdf

The Club Race Officer (“CRO”) certification test, which is given at the
conclusion of the seminar, is optional. However, in order to be certified as a
US SAILING CRO you’re required to attend a complete seminar and pass the test.
Moreover, in order to be certified as a CRO you’ll also need to have a copy of
the current US SAILING Race Management Handbook and meet the program’s other
criteria. Registration will take place on the day of the event. The seminar fee
($30 for US SAILING members and for non-members who don’t take the test; $60 for
non-members who take the test) includes handouts but does not materials. The fee
doesn’t include required seminar publications from US SAILING. Bring the
attached registration confirmation, along with your check payable to Hawaii
Yacht Racing Association on the morning of the event.

9:00 Registration at Kaneohe’s Upper Deck.

Beer Tasting Thursday!

Aloha Yacht Club Members and Beer Lovers!

The monthly Beer Club tasting is scheduled for tomorrow night, Thursday, September 17, starting at 6 p.m. Scott Peyerk is off island due to work, so, Bill Beadle will be acting as host for this month. Sorry for the late notice, but don't let that stop you from having a great time at the Club. Come join us , celebrating good company and the genius of those who combine water, hops and barley to create BEER!

Beers to be tasted:

Wailua Wheat by Kona Brewing Company - A medium light pale wheat beer with hints of citrus and passion fruit, 5.4% ABV ... this is a seasonal fruity beer designed to refresh on those hot days of summer (or September).

Stone Mill Organic Pale Ale by Green Valley Brewing (Michelob) - 100% organic barley malt grown in Canada married to hops from the Pacific Northwest, 5.5% ABV ... another American pale beer, with a strong taste of hops.

Long Hammer IPA by Red Hook Bewing - Distinctive India Pale Ale brewed by "dry hopping" or adding hops at the end of the brewing process 6.5% ABV ... IPA were originally brewed in England to weather long trips at sea for delivery to troops throughout the empire. Here's to history!

Black Hook Porter by Red Hook Brewing - tradidtional London style top fermented Porter, 5.3% ABV ... well hopped, ebony black with a dark malt flavor, hints of coffee and chocolate...dessert anyone?

Cost: $15 for a lot of beer!

Food available from the Galley by the Sea...

Lahaina Return NOR + Entry

Please find the Notice of Race and Entry Form on the HYRA website.

Aloha sailors,

I can’t believe we’re already in late August, and Lahaina is just around the corner. Next weekend we are scheduled to have the Lahaina feeder to Lanai, but it seems there is some lack of interest for this race, so it will most likely not take place. It would have been a great time, maybe we will try it again next year. It is a busy sailing season and everyone cherishes those lazy weekends that don’t involve sailing.

Last year for the Lahaina Return we had 39 boats in the race, and this year’s goal is to have at least 45 boats. Please let us know if you’re racing, so that we can get a head count.

I have also made a deal with Maui Zen Day Spa for those who are interested. Basically, if 5 or more of us book a massage for the same day, they will give 15% discount off their regular prices. Please see the attached flyer and when you book mention the Lahaina Return Special.

If you have any questions, please e-mail or call me.
Hope to see all of you in Lahaina in about 2 week’s time.

Wine Tasting cancelled

HYC Members,

Due to the lack of response I sadly must cancel the wine tasting for tonight at HYC. It takes a lot of planning to do this event as we try to have cheese, crackers and fruit to try to match the tasting. In order to do this we need a reservation response, this time we had to. I am sorry we cannot go to the expense of guessing how many people will show and hope that we have the correct number of bottles and the right amount of food to go around.

I can only hope that in the future when we try to do one of these we can get more participation, This take everyones time and effort to put these together and make them something special.

If you have any questions please call me and not Mey as she is not in charge of this and cannot answer your questions.

Thank you

HYC Lanai Race - Lahaina Feeder

Aloha Racers,

we are planning to run the Lanai Race as a feeder to Lahaina. The race is scheduled to occur on Saturday, August 29 and would probably have a start around 7:00 AM. The finish line will likely be at Kaumalapau Harbor, Lanai. There are some excellent anchorages in Lanai, with some of the best diving in the state. Multihulls, cruisers, and all other race boats are invited to participate. However, we have no idea what the interest level amongst the fleet is.

If you are interested in participating in this race, please send an email to hyc.racecommittee@gmail.com, or call Joseph at 497-9155.

aloha,
Joseph Shacat

Roy Disney's New Letter

Following his letters published in 2005 and 2007 about the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor, Roy Disney’s letter has been published in today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the Honolulu Advertiser.

From the Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Ala Wai repairs garner praise

What a pleasant surprise!

Two years ago, and indeed four years ago as well, I spoke on behalf of many others regarding the sad state of the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor, and the rather grim aspect it presented to the visitor to Honolulu, and especially to the racers arriving there after the long and grueling biannual Transpac sailing race from California.

Shortly afterwards, I was privileged to spend some time at DOBOR with Laura Thielen and her staff, and learned that plans were already under way to remedy the situation, with the explicit approval of Gov. Linda Lingle.
In the intervening two years, a great deal has been accomplished, including a total of 248 brand new -- and beautiful -- slips at rows B, C, D and F, as well as a number of other improvements on the surrounding dry areas. And I understand there are more improvements in the works, especially to Row 700 and Row 500.

There are many others who deserve thanks as well, including Mayor Mufi Hannemann, the state Legislature, the Transpac Honolulu Committee, all the affected yacht clubs, and volunteers galore.

I know I can speak for everyone who raced to Hawaii this year ... and doubtless for many, many more, visitors and residents alike, when I extend my most sincere congratulations and thanks for the wonderful steps that have been taken at the Ala Wai. It was a great sight to see!

Roy E. Disney

From the Honolulu Advertiser:

Ala wai harbor Improvements have been wonderful

What a pleasant surprise!

Two years ago, and indeed four years ago as well, you were kind enough to print letters from me — speaking on behalf of many others — regarding the sad state of the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor, and the rather grim aspect it presented to the visitor to Honolulu, and especially to the racers arriving there after the long and grueling biannual Transpac sailing race from California.

Shortly afterward, I was privileged to spend some time at the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation with Laura Thielen and her staff, and learned that plans were already under way to remedy the situation.

In the intervening two years, a great deal has been accomplished, including a total of 248 brand new — and beautiful — slips at rows B, C, D, and F, as well as a number of other improvements. And I understand there are more improvements in the works, especially to row 700 and row 500 (which many of us know fondly as "Transpac Row").

There are many others who deserve thanks as well, including Mayor Hannemann, the state Legislature, the Transpac Honolulu Committee, all the affected yacht clubs and volunteers.

I extend my most sincere congratulations and thanks for the wonderful steps that have been taken at the Ala Wai.
